New Shoes

It has been a cool day. Pleasant for Memorial Day Weekend. Rain is on the way. I was with the trees on the Woods Walk today, but missed the rocks. The rocks have an ancient drawing power. At least for this old man. It took them a long time to form. They did not come into their fullness for many moons. The rocks are a bit like we humans; our development is slow. After nearly 68 years, I could have progressed a little faster. But then again, perhaps not.

We can follow the same myth for most of our lives and never know it for its true face. Doing the same thing and expecting different results is a form of insanity. We are all somewhat insane.

We enjoy speaking of change. It is a noble word. It is good for you, and I do not need any, thank you very much. We want to go home, but cannot find the right road. We embrace wrong ideas as life lessons and thus continue to be challenged in our quest. Education is a good thing. It gives a sense of place and perspective. To have disdain for learning is to have disdain for life.

The right path feels right. Our feet have been there before. Our shoes are comfortable. The walk is easy, and spirits are high. It is the path where the birds sing in the morning and the frogs croak a merry tune at night. The fox and deer join us in the journey, and they smile broadly as we travel together.

Deceivers pop out of the woods’ foliage along the path back home. They promise us an easier way to happiness and peace. Try my new shoes on your tired feet and you will feel refreshed, and the path will feel like the clouds the deceivers promise. My gold shoes will take you to riches and power like you have never seen the deceivers say. There is a more exciting way to travel back home, they said.

‘It is a bit dark on the path,’ Chet said. ‘I hope we do not get lost before sunset,’ Chet observed. ‘There is quite a party over the hill,’ Chet said. ‘When I walked over there, the folks were dancing manically and bumping into each other with all manner of drinks and drugs and distractions,’ Chet noted. ‘They invited me to join them and try on a pair of their new gold shoes, which they claimed took all of their care away and made the life bumps seem nonexistent,’ Chet said with passion. ‘I asked them if there was a lie laced into the fabric of the shoes,’ Chet noted.
