Don’t Let The Old Man In

Another cool day for Memorial Day Sunday. Rain and cool temperatures are my thing. When you reach the magical golden years, grocery shopping is an adventure. Having lost the tedium of work, you now have fun at the store in the salad aisle. There is also the enjoyment of good seltzer water. It is medicinal. Old men in stores have smiles on their faces as they contemplate their hobbies and remember their worries. It is the days of wine and roses, but your stomach will not allow too much wine and roses do die quickly.

We are excited about Jennifer Annelise and Lee coming for the Memorial Day Cook Off. Aaron is our Grill Master. It is the kick-off to the summer season. Summer is a time to get out of doors and become one with nature. Although I do this year-round. I love being outside in the woods. During my daily walks, I reflect on what a wonderful world, as Louie Armstrong sang about. If it ever dawns on us that we are all temporaries on this beautiful orb and every man and woman is part of our family, we would have the peaceable kingdom we all seek.

As age attempts to grasp my hand and lead me down the old folks path I resist. Life is to exciting to give into aches and pains. There is so much exploring to do and thinking deep thoughts like Jack Handy. Movement is essential to happiness when possible. Movement engenders engaging thoughts and uplifting of spirit. Happiness and hope come from within. We fashion our world to a great extent. Living for the happiness of others is a great calling.

The great secret of this life is to lift up others. What seems to be a simple smile or a kind word may change someone’s life. God puts us together as we are needed. God is most readily found in the eyes of a fellow human being. It is terribly easy to become a curmudgeon and be bitter rather than better. The life of complaint and what-ifs has a wide door. There is a smaller, nondescript wooden door in the back of the room that many enter while their fellows flock to the wide door of regrets. The smaller door leads to happiness and accomplishment. It is not important how many times you have fallen… You must get up and dust yourself off each time. The race is not for the swift or strong, but the persistent…persistence is the key…
