Purpose Brings Peace

‘ Idle hands are the devil’s workshop; idle lips are his mouthpiece.’   Proverbs 16:27   TLB

We humans are designed for action.  When we are idle for longer than we should be our minds wander and our thoughts turn to our, unfulfilled, wants and desires and inner mischief.

Of course, we all experience long periods in our lives where it seems that there is not enough hours in the day to accomplish the, necessary, tasks that we must do.  The job…care for our children…study…taking care of our home and the many, sundry, duties that accompany its upkeep.

However, there are also times, even when we are our busiest, that a singular purpose and passion, can be the key to tranquility.

I was watching the popular comedian, Jerry Seinfeld, being interviewed on a television program that was discussing the secret of longevity for those that had reached their 90s’.  Jerry said that he believed the movement was the key to longevity and to happiness.

He recounted that when he awakens, in the morning, that he feels inadequate and depressed and believes that he is unable to accomplish what he needs to do for the day ahead.

But, once that he places his feet on the floor and begins to move…he is happy and his doubts vanish.

Purpose is vital…no matter how busy that you are.  When I was raising our boys I wanted them to travel, as much as we could afford, and I wanted the best for them.

I also was immersed in the success of Southern Illinois University and and worked toward that end…joyfully.

Also, the christian walk has been paramount in my life since I was twelve years old.  The christian walk that I am speaking of is not an emotional and frenetic seeking of an spiritual high…which will burn the walker out quickly.

Rather, it is the quiet and daily attempt to live Christ’s teachings of ‘love one another as I have loved you.’

When the work and family rearing chapter of your life, page is turned, to the retirement chapter, it is critical to have a purpose in your golden years.

My friend, Jo Ann, told me many years ago that I was a renaissance man.  I am trying to fulfill that title in my years of reflection.

The christian walk continues and the love of traveling with my family and the passion for SIU and its success…but the additions of writing and photography and reading and an awareness of just how unfair the poor of our land and the immigrant and the mentally ill are treated in this, our beloved:

‘ Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore  Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!’   The New Colossus  Emma Lazarus

We humans respond to a mission…we seek the call of ‘the householder’  when he asked, ‘ And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you.  And they went their way.  And he went out about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, and did likewise.  And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here idle?  They saith unto him, Because no man hath hired us….’   Matthew 20: 3-7a   KJV

Our immigration policy now includes the separation of parents from their minor children and the subsequent locking of the children in cages.

Tent cites are to be erected to facilitate the thousands of captured children until they can be deported.

This is supposed to be a deterrent to illegal immigration…

If you were fleeing oppression and danger and genocide…how would you feel to have your children ripped from your arms and subsequently locked up in a cage…or placed in a tent city?

You say…that will never happen in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave…do not be so sure…the Jews in Germany did not think that they would be separated in concentration camps and then sent to gas chambers.

When there is ‘a special place in hell’ for our closest ally and …within forty-eight hours…we are honored to set in a meeting with one of the cruelest and most blood thirsty dictators in the world…we are in the twilight zone and we have gone down the rabbit hole.

Are you setting idly in the market place…because no man hath hired you?
